Lichtenvoorde, Netherlands
At dawn on the day after Christmas, mist envelops the Dutch countryside.
Mist is a mass of fine droplets or ice crystals that have formed on microscopic hygroscopic particles when the air has become supersaturated with water or ice, reducing visibility at the surface1. This is one form of meteorite water.
By convention, meteorologists speak of mist when horizontal visibility is more than one kilometre and of fog if visibility is less than one kilometre. Sailors often use the term fog regardless of horizontal visibility and also call it sea smoke when it is evaporative fog.
