In Barcelona's Gothic Cathedral of the Holy Cross and Saint Eulalia, Christ on his cross looks down on us.
I found this representation both moving and beautiful.
This magnificent cathedral was built between 1298 and 1450 and has been dedicated to Saint Eulalia, patron saint of the city of Barcelona, since 599. Eulalia was a legendary young goose keeper who was martyred by the Romans. The young girl was exposed naked in the forum. A miraculous snowfall covered her in the middle of spring.
She was finally crucified on an X-shaped cross, which has become the symbol of Barcelona cathedral and an attribute of Saint Eulalia.
In reference to the saintly goose keeper who died at the age of 13, the cathedral's Gothic cloister is guarded by thirteen white geese. The geese have to be incorporated in pairs to be accepted by the group, and they can still be seen today.
