Perpignan, France
Rue du Paradis (Paradise street) is so misnamed. The buildings there are insalubrious, and some are regularly collapsing.
This is the gypsy quarter in the city centre.
I photographed the gypsy community of Perpignan, in French Catalonia, for a dozen years. On the Spanish border, these gypsies live a sedentary existence, sometimes in terrible poverty.
