La Défense, France
The La Défense district of Paris is home to some remarkable architectural works of modern art, set in an area of over 160 hectares. ‘La Ronde des manches à air’, by the French artist Daniel Buren, is a work made up of 16 10-metre-high galvanised steel masts, to the tops of which are attached stainless steel weather vanes and multicoloured windsocks made of polyester fabric with alternating white and coloured vertical strips measuring 8.7 cm. These windsocks, over 4 metres long, rotate continuously to follow the direction of the wind, the predominant feature of the La Défense esplanade. At dusk, they are illuminated by LEDs placed inside the cones. The work stands at the foot of the Grande Arche at La Défense.
Each of Buren's creations renews the relationship between the work, the site and the viewer.
