Serengeti National Park, TanzaniaA rhinoceros with two horns.
Rhinos are in serious danger of extinction.
Poaching and the ivory trade are the main causes...
In Africa, the southern white rhinos, thought to be extinct, reproduce to some extent in protected sanctuaries, but are classified as ‘highly endangered’.
The northern white rhino subspecies is almost extinct, with a few captive individuals surviving in Kenya.
Black rhinos, for their part, have doubled in number over the last two decades, after reaching the critical level of 2,480 individuals, but they are still a long way from the 100,000 individuals estimated in the first part of the 20th century.
