Detail of the Fountain of the Four Rivers (built by Bernini in the centre of the Piazza Navona in 1651) representing the Ganges, and sculpted by the French Baroque artist Claude Poussin (the other rivers symbolised are the Nile, the Danube and the Rio de la Plata). A boat represents the navigability of the river and a snake stands next to the bearded giant.
This is an architectural work commissioned by Pope Innocent X: the dove and olive branch at the top of the obelisk in the centre of the fountain are the emblems of his family (the Pamphili), who had a palace in the square.Behind it is the church of Sant'Agnese in Agone.
The fountain appeared in Ron Howard's film Angels and Demons, the film adaptation of Dan Brown's novel and sequel to The Da Vinci Code.
