In 2016, gorillas moved from the ‘endangered’ category to the dramatic ‘ threatened with extinction’ category.
The apes' habitats are being destroyed by agriculture (which affects 76% of the species), forest exploitation (60%), livestock farming, roads and railways, oil and gas drilling and mining. In addition, hunting and poaching directly affect 60% of species.
