Masaï Mara National Reserve, Kenya.

Portrait of a lion, right in the eyes.

The male lion is distinguished by his thick, dark mane, which becomes more pronounced with age and serves to impress rivals and attract females.

Male lions are generally larger and more massive than females, weighing between 150 and 250 kg. Although he sometimes takes part in hunting, his main role is to defend the territory and members of the pride against intruders, including other lions.
