Saint-Pierre cathedral is a Catholic cathedral in the Hérault department. Situated in the heart of the old town, it is the city's most important Gothic monument and an emblematic example of a ‘cathedral-fortress’.
Four towers rise from the corners of the nave, one of which was knocked down during the Protestant iconoclastic movements of 1567. The building was heavily defended, and by the end of the 16th century it was known as ‘Fort Saint-Pierre’. The entrance is preceded by a massive porch, made up of two cylindrical pillars and a vault linking the pillars to the front of the church. It looks like rockets ready to take to the skies!
