Djebela, MoroccoPortrait of a Barbary macaque (also known as a ‘magot’ or ‘Berber macaque’).
Photo published in the Musée de St-Cyprien exhibition catalogue following the exhibition ‘L'Odyssée de Grégory Herpe’, a retrospective of my work, from March to June 2017.
This is the only macaque living in Africa in the wild in the forests of Morocco and Algeria.
It can also be found on the Rock of Gibraltar, where it is Europe's only free-ranging primate.
The species is on the red list of endangered species. Completely extinct in Tunisia, it is in decline in Algeria and Morocco.
