Amboseli, Kenya.

People think zebras are protected. But this is not true. Several species, such as Grevy's zebra, are highly endangered.

Between 1960 and 1980, 90% of these zebras were killed for their lovely skins.

In 1871, Charles Darwin was astonished:

‘The zebra is striped in such a way as to make it very conspicuous, and its stripes afford it no protection on the open plains of Africa. Why is that?

In 2015, researchers processed images taken in the field in Tanzania, using filters that simulated the appearance of zebras for lions or hyenas.

They found that beyond 50m during the day, 30m in semi-darkness and 9m on a moonless night, these predators no longer detected the stripes, unlike human vision.

Photo published in the Musée de St-Cyprien exhibition catalogue following the exhibition ‘L'Odyssée de Grégory Herpe’, a retrospective of my work, from March to June 2017.
