During the Troubles, the Shankill was a centre of loyalist activity. The modern Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) (sworn enemies of the IRA) was born on the Shankill and its first attack was on the road on 7 May 1966 when a group of UVF men led by Gusty Spence bombed a Catholic pub.
