Perpignan, France
Photo published in the exhibition catalogue ‘L'Odyssée de Grégory Herpe’ during his solo exhibition at the Musée de Saint-Cyprien, France, in 2017.
It was exhibited at the European Parliament in Strasbourg the same year as part of a solo exhibition dedicated to gypsies, while MEPs debated new laws concerning the gypsy community in Europe.
In the Saint Jacques district of Perpignan, in Occitanie, France, gypsies live in virtual autarky.
Drugs and violence are high. Young people are idle, like these teenagers with their fathers' weapons in their hands, in the middle of the street. Provocation, games, this is how they live.
I photographed the gypsy community of Perpignan, in French Catalonia, for twelve years. On the Spanish border, these gypsies are sedentary, sometimes in terrible poverty.
